Rural Development

Serving the Rural Masses

In our task of Rural Development, one can easily understand the magnitude of the problem and the handicap of the agencies involved in community development. Voluntary organizations are necessarily restricted in their influence by the availability of resources and personnel.

But beyond doubt, non-governmental organizations have more flexibility than the Government agencies and have more scope for addressing the various issues of people in the rural and urban areas.

As we are aware, voluntary organizations were deeply engaged in charity and relief operations in the past and provided services of various types in the fields of education, health care and economic development.  Voluntary efforts had done a great deal of pioneering work in those days and such work has set a model for the Government to develop their policies on rural development.  As the manifestation of urban poverty has its direct roots in the rural scenario, any developmental programme has to necessarily encompass all aspects of human life at the grass root level.  The YMCA Rural development center and the task group have the tremendous task of addressing these issues at least to a certain degree if not completely.  It's also time for YMCAs to think of a new direction in the area of rural development taking into consideration the present needs of the people under the contemporary situation.

The following programmes were organized in that direction by the rural development department with the support and cooperation of our task group during the year 2008-2009.

Vocational Skill Training Programme

The tailoring training center at YMCA Kumbalgodu continues to serve the rural women to learn job oriented skills for their own empowerment. About 55 women from the rural areas surrounding Kumbalgodu were trained during the year in tailoring skills. The main objective of this programme was to impart leadership skills to the youth for development. Mr. John Kennedy Branch secretary moderated these sessions.

Task Group Meetings

The Rural development task group meetings were held on July 10th & 6th September 2008. It was decided in these meetings to identify job oriented skills for the youth of this area. In that direction, the secretary in-charge identified the directorate of training and employment, government of India, as a potential source of support for the skill training programmes conducted by YMCA training centre at Kumbalgodu.

Dr. Shobha Yohan from Christian Medical Association of India facilitated the morning session and Rev. David, Vice president, South India Bible College; Bangarpet conducted the session on 'counseling' in the evening.  Mr.S. Paulraj, programme officer CMAI addressed the participants.
